‘I used to be most likely a bit too aggressive’ – disenchanted Kaden Groves seventh on stage 9 of Giro d’Italia

On paper, stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia appeared completely suited to Kaden Groves with a tough remaining that included repetitive climbs after virtually 200 kilometres of racing.

The sprinter has proven that he’s on type and might outclimb the opposite fastmen within the Giro, and so he used his Alpecin-Deceuninck crew to regulate the hole to the breakaway on the second-longest stage of the three-week race. By the point the peloton hit the Intermediate dash after 158km of racing, the entire eight-man squad was in line on the entrance. The plan was clear, management the hole, reel the early breakaway in, use the bumpy final third of the stage to dispatch rivals after which, do a lead-out for Groves.
